Top Tip

We found that Mexico can be as cheap or as expensive as you like. If you want to go cheap (but still sooo tasty) street food is readily available everywhere! There were also a great range of restaurants in every town and city we went to in Mexico that were not that expensive and amazing value for what you get. There is also an option for going all out if you do fancy spending a bit more for a upmarket dining experience. So search around and you can definitely tailor your experience to suit all budgets!

Travelling Mexico Our Costs Breakdown

Total amounts including % spent in each area

Accommodation = 13,340 MXN   36%

Our accommodation ranged from Hostels to AirBnB and even a surprisingly cheap, always worth checking all bases sometimes you can be pleasantly surprised!

Eating Out = 8,720 MXN     23.5%

If you are anything like us a high percentage of this was spent on guacamole! Mexico is such a treat for cuisine we tried as many different Mexican dishes as we could whilst we were there, Sabultes were top of the list for us!

Transport (Public) = 5,968 MXN 16.1%

The buses are amazing in Mexico and accounted for most of our traveling means there. The ADO bus stations and stops are located in pretty much every major city and towns so you will be rarely be stuck for finding transportation in or out of somewhere!

 Transport (Private) = 1,280 MXN    3.5%

From the odd taxi here and there (that wont set you back too much) to renting a car for our Yucatan Road Trip. We would highly recommend renting a car especially if there are a few of  you to split the cost. It’s a great way to see things and also gives you the freedom to plan your own tour or road trip! We also rented bikes in Mahahual which was a great way to get around.

Water / Drinks  = 1,860 MXN    5%

Pretty much all of the Hostels we stayed at in Mexico have their own free water dispensers which saves soooo much money! Make sure you take a look around in your hostel before heading our to go on a agua run! We would usually fill up our water bottles before heading out for the day!

Alcohol = 819 MXN    2.2%

As we are not huge alcohol drinkers (except for the odd crazy night out!) we didn’t spend a huge amount on alcohol although sometimes you cannot beat sitting on the beach with a ice cold beer after a day in the sun!

Groceries / Sweets / Chocolate = 1,903 MXN    5.1%

During our stay in Mexico we did a few trips to the markets, local shops and supermarkets when we were staying in a place or hostel for a few days as sometimes its nice to have a bit of home cooked food! Some hostels we stayed in also provided breakfast or something you could help yourself to in the morning like cereals or fruit to set you up before you head out for the day. It’s always worth checking with your hostel if breakfast is provided.

Sights / Museums = 1,694 MXN    4.6%

Our tours in Mexico ranged from Flamingo watching in Celestun to free walking tours round cities, visiting museums and the epic Mayan ruins around the Yucatan & Chiapas. Our favourite was Palenque! Also have an ask at your hostel as there’s often some great free tours available.

Street Food = 521 MXN    1.4%

Churros, churros, churros!  Pretty much accounted for most of our street food spends! At 5 MXN at most places you can imagine how many we ate! (became a bit of an obsession).

Other = 925 MXN    2.5%

Included – Medicine / Bag / Book / Washing and the Magazines.
