Living Alternatively – Books To Help & Inspire You

Living Alternatively - Books To Help & Inspire You

Living alternatively has brought & continues to bring me so much happiness & adventure, but it also comes with its challenges. Since Adam & I packed everything up & chose to jump into van life just over 18 months ago, our journey has been filled with ups & downs. We have found countless online resources & tools that have helped us, are surrounded by some awesome people & have the love & support of each other. However, in homage to World Book Day, I wanted to share with you guys, the books that have helped me the most, in living a location independent lifestyle & becoming more closely connected with Nature.

Stuffocation – For Living Alternatively & Clutter-Free

This book was such a massive help when I was sorting through my worldly possesions & figuring out what was worthy of space in our new tiny home on wheels. Written by two friends, who, after questioning their expensive belongings & ridiculous collection of ties, set themselves a challenge – they put everything into boxes & what they didn’t use… well they obviously didn’t need. If you are looking to get into a de-cluttering mindset this is the book for you!

Humble The Poet : Unlearn: 101 Simple Truths for a Better Life

I love this guy – he has such an eloquent way of delivering the truth. One thing I didn’t think of when choosing to live alternatively is all of the barriers I would come up against from other people, at first it really frustrated me as I just couldn’t understand why they didn’t understand – then it clicked! I was stuck in old patterns & it was time to un-learn. Humble is was the guy who taught me how.

How to Survive – Lessons for Everyday Life from the Extreme World

Filled with inspiring survival stories with great insight into a survival mindset – we often think of survival as an extreme only circumstance but tips such as keeping your body at a regulatory temperature & knowing how to navigate using the stars & the sun are some of the gems that John weaves throughout this book – he helps you to understand how to apply them & enrich your everyday life.

The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment

For me, living alternatively has very much meant living in the moment – funnily enough, this book has popped up several times in my life but just as I was making the transition into full-time van life I felt really compelled to read it. It has guided me massively & helped me to understand what it truly means to be living my soul’s purpose. Eckhart’s sequel to this A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose is also excellent.

The World Beyond Your Head: On Becoming an Individual in an Age of Distraction

Literally everything distracts us nowadays & this really opened my eyes as to just how distracted I can be. For me, part of living alternatively means running an online business, which equals a lot of time online – Matthew helps to put things into perspective & has helped me set boundaries with everything digital.

Books on Shamanic Practices – The Shamanic Journey: A Practical Guide to Therapeutic Shamanism | Rewilding Yourself: Discovering Your Soul’s Deep Roots Through Shamanic Practices | Finding Your Deep Soul: Guidance for Authentic Living Through Shamanic Practices

After visiting a Shamanic healer in Barcelona, just before we got married last year I delved really deep into reading about Shamanic practices, particularly drawn by Human disconnection from Nature. Since an early age, I have had the belief of great power & after my first Shamanic experience being so profound (I literally stopped eating meat that day, with no prior thought or post questioning) I now know myself on a much deeper level. I love the way that Paul Francis gives really practical tips as to how we can apply Shamanic principles in the modern world & incorporate Shamanic practice into our everyday. There will be more books from him soon & after reading these three I can’t wait to get my hands on them!

Do you live an alternative lifestyle? Are there any books or resources that you have used, read & love? Let me know in the comments below.

Freedom filled wishes,

Kelly x
