Free & Easy
maps.me is free to download & use & is so simple to operate! You can use the app completely offline, just download the map you require by country or area when your online & you’ll be good to go!
Remember when using it this way you’ll be taking up storage on the device on which you have downloaded your maps, we find if we delete them when we are finished in a place to make room for the next one it saves space.
The app uses GPS to pin point your exact location so you can view on your map exactly where you are. We find this feature extremely useful & reliable, in remote areas it may take a while to catch up on your location but we have found it has worked everywhere we’ve been.
Having used maps.me in Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Italy, Mexico, Guatemala, Spain, USA & UK we can certainly vouch for it’s pinpointing accuracy!
This feature is also great for things like long bus journeys so you can check on the map exactly how far you are from your final destination.
What You Need
Your nearest ATM, Restaurant, Pharmacy – maps.me has a built in “categories” feature to help you find most things you would need. This is a feature we have found so useful, it has saved us a ton of time searching for our closest ATM for example when arriving in a place & gives us more time to enjoy exactly what we have come to see.
You can also use the app as a sat nav for driving, walking or cycling routes, the only thing we would highlight is that although the accuracy is spot on it can sometimes be off on the timings or distances, we have found a simple solution to this in checking online before we set off the exact distance & estimated times of a journey with an alternative map provider, just so that we have a comparison & a better idea.
This is probably our favourite thing about the app, it details every road & trail, thus enables us to go off & explore on our own! Remember the tip above about double checking distances before you set off & you’ll be good to go on most adventures with it!
The app also marks cool stuff like smaller points of interest & viewpoints that would not normally be on the “tourist” radar, we have managed to find some really great spots by checking what looks worth checking out in the area we are in.
Add To It
If you are out & about & come across something that isn’t included on the app you can add it yourself using the “add a place to maps” function.
We really like this feature & have used it a lot, especially in Cuba which is quickly developing & we found ATM’s & all sorts popping up in various places!
Save Your Places
You can pin locations with maps.me & this is a feature that we really love! When you’ve just arrived at a new place you can just drop on pin on where you are staying to get back there later, or have a look in advance & pin anywhere that you’d like to go see in a place.
It’s also great to look back on after to remember the names of all of the places you have been, especially for travel bloggers like us who want to explain to you guys exactly where things are & how to get there!
Tell A Friend
Tell all of your friends or anyone you meet about maps.me! We do because it’s great to use & will cost them nothing, if someone stops us in the street & asks us for directions we tell them about it, it’s a great app to share with others. You can share this article with all of your friends using our buttons below!
We have used it in cities, towns, in the most remote areas & whilst hiking so if you haven’t already got it get downloading!
Happy Exploring 🙂
